How do you build a seismic class 8 plant in Chile?

2025-07-22

In Chile on the west coast of South America, the activity of the Pacific Rim seismic belt makes earthquake resistance a core proposition for industrial buildings. Recently, Canglong Group has officially completed the 3D model design of a 101m×26.6m×10.05m magnitude 8 earthquake-resistant factory building built for a Chilean manufacturing customer. The modular structure of its steel frame and rock wool sandwich panels, precise 3D model verification, and detailed design adapted to Chile's climate and earthquake characteristics provide a case of safe infrastructure for Chinese companies to go overseas to Chile.

Earthquake-resistant steel frame with a magnitude of 8

The magnitude 8 earthquake in Chile (Richter magnitude 8, corresponding to an acceleration of about 0.3g) puts forward strict requirements on the ductility, integrity, and node strength of the building. Canglong Group takes strong columns and weak beams, strong nodes and weak components as the design principles, and uses Q355B H-shaped steel frame as the core load-bearing system.

Steel columns and beams: Q355B low-alloy high-strength structural steel (yield strength ≥ 355MPa) is selected. Its toughness and impact resistance are better than ordinary Q235 steel. It can absorb energy through plastic deformation when earthquake energy is released to avoid sudden breakage.

Bolt connection: Abandoning the traditional welding process, large hexagonal high-strength bolts (grade 10.9) are used to connect the beam-column nodes, with an adjustable error of ±2mm, which not only ensures installation accuracy and complies with the Chilean industrial building specification NCh 439, but also reserves repair space after the earthquake through the "detachable" feature.

Support system: X-shaped cross supports (using Q235B angle steel) are set along the longitudinal direction of the factory building (101 meters), forming a dual anti-lateral displacement system of frame and support with the steel frame, which dissipates energy first in earthquakes and reduces damage to the main structure.

Functional division of production workshop and warehouse

In the space of 101 meters long and 26.6 meters wide, Canglong has achieved efficient layout of production and warehousing through column spacing optimization:

Production workshop (occupying the first 54 meters): adopts 8m standard column spacing (conventional 6m column spacing extension), with 10-ton driving track, to meet the installation requirements of large machinery. The height of the steel beam is 1.8m (eaves height is 10.05 meters), and space for top ventilation ducts and fire pipelines is reserved.

Warehouse area (occupying the back 47 meters): The column spacing is adjusted to 12m, and the lightweight characteristics of rock wool sandwich panels are used to reduce the foundation load. The ground is made of corrugated steel plates and 50mm thick C30 concrete, with a load capacity of 5 tons/㎡, suitable for heavy cargo stacking.

Brick wall: The wall part has a 2-meter-high brick wall, which not only meets the fire protection requirements (fire resistance limit ≥ 2 hours), but also reliably connects with the main steel structure through pre-buried tie bars (Φ12@500) to avoid wall collapse during earthquakes.

Reasonable combination of color steel plate and rock wool sandwich panel

Facing the high humidity (annual average humidity 75%) and strong wind (summer gusts ≥ 12 levels) in the coastal area of Chile, Canglong customized a composite enclosure system for the roof and wall for the factory.

Roof system: It adopts Canglong's independently developed W840 color steel plate (wave height 40mm, effective coverage width 840mm), surface hot-dip galvanized layer 275g/㎡ + PVDF fluorocarbon coating (salt spray resistance ≥ 2000 hours), and is matched with C-shaped steel purlins (galvanized layer ≥ 180g/㎡, spacing 1.5m). The large-amplitude design of W840 enhances the rigidity of the roof (wind-resistant ability ≥1.5kPa), and cooperates with the eaves flashing board (thickness 1.2mm) and gutter drainage (slope 2%) to eliminate the risk of rainstorm waterlogging.

Wall system: 100kg/m³ density rock wool sandwich panel is selected, fire rating A1, thermal conductivity ≤0.040W/(m·K), and the panel is 0.6mm thick aluminum-zinc steel plate (salt spray resistance ≥1500 hours). The rock wool core material filling volume is 180kg/㎡, which not only meets the workshop insulation requirements (winter room temperature ≥12℃), but also enhances the impact resistance of the wall through the "sandwich" structure, which can withstand 10kg of sand and gravel hitting at a speed of 8m/s.

The 8-level earthquake-resistant plant built by Canglong Group for Chilean customers is not only a combination of steel and plates, but also a precise control of the earthquake zone by China's infrastructure. When the Chilean crust shakes again, this factory building will become a safe fortress for the production workshop and a protective shield for stored goods. It will also become a vivid footnote to the reliable technology and considerate service in the industrial cooperation between China and Chile.
